On October 3, 2015 The SFGH Community Wellness Program participated along with community partners in a very successful Family Health Fair in the Bayview Hunters Point neighborhoods. The event promoted nutrition, fitness, treatment, mental health and prevention of chronic health conditions for families. This year’s fair featured senior and kids’ zones, health screenings, cooking demonstrations, vegetable giveaways, raffle prizes and more. The Community Wellness Program provided nutrition education around healthy beverages. Their goal: to educate and inform people on the hidden amounts of sugar in various beverages. Volunteers engaged participants by asking them how many teaspoons of sugar were in particular beverages. To the participants’ surprise, there was always more sugar in the drink than they anticipated. This visual and tactile approach to nutrition education appeared to be effective when participants responded, “I am never drinking those again!”
The Community Wellness Program has participated in 10 different community events within the past year and will continue to share easy, healthy tips in our community in an effort to ultimately encourage better food choices!
